After watching your vet take one little look at your pet and accurately deducing what the problem is, it’s easy to marvel at them in their superhero scrubs and think they must be descendants from some mythical place sent here to save us all. We wholeheartedly agree. They are real-life superheroes and what they do is truly miraculous, but your vet might be more human than you think.

Meet Dr Nicky Greenblat

We asked our favourite vet to leave her scrubs at the door so we could bring you a more up-close-and-personal experience with the human behind the scrubs. Dr Nicky is the Head of Pet Wellness at dotsure.co.za. When we asked if she had always wanted to become a vet, her answer was a resounding YES! “I decided I wanted to become a vet around the age of 10 and held onto that dream throughout my school years.” She added. Dr Nicky is living proof that hard work and perseverance can make one’s dreams a reality.

If she could choose a (bad) habit from any of her previous dogs, she would love to join them in a daily afternoon nap. She loves her job, but home time is the best time! We all relish that moment when we can finally kick off the work shoes and lounge in our pyjamas and you guessed it, vets are no different. On her days off she enjoys spending quality time with her kids, gardening, exercising, and getting lost in a great book.

And, just like the rest of us, she’s also been in the throes of new love and friendships, where our names are traded in for more enchanting monikers like honeybun and munchkin. But not all pet names are as cute as pets and when we asked what her least favourite pet name was, she said: “Pickles. From Nickles Pickles 😊.”

We asked Dr Nicky a few questions thought you might find her answers interesting!

Typical day in the office.

Dr Nicky doesn’t save pets on the operating table anymore, she does it all in the boardroom as the Head of Pet Wellness at dotsure.co.za. Sometimes she throws on her superhero suit and it’s all action, but other times she sits in meetings all day long (don’t we just love those days), and some days it’s just her and her computer.

We asked if she has pet insurance

Contrary to pawpular opinion, vets don’t just pick the shiniest kitchen utensil or run up to the attic for the first aid kid and miraculously conduct a full-scale operation on their kitchen counter when something goes awry – they rely on pet insurance too! Dr Nicky had a Maine Coon that regrettably passed away last year from old age, may its soul rest in peace. She doesn’t have a pet at the moment but said: “If I had a pet, I would take out pet insurance to assist with the unexpected veterinary expenses.”

Biggest lesson she’s learned from a pet

“Unconditional love. Pets are always happy to see you, regardless of how they are feeling.”

Dr Nicky’s best wellness tip for pet parents

“Spend time with your pets and be aware of their normal habits and routines. If you notice any changes in behaviour, it is time to see your vet.”

Favourite quote about pets

We asked Dr Nicky about her favourite quote about pets and like many of us, she couldn’t settle for just one.

  • “Be the person your dog thinks you are.” - J. Frick, and
  • “The world would be a nicer place if everyone had the ability to love as unconditionally as a dog.” – M.K. Clinton

(Pet) pickup lines

Are you a cat? ‘Cause you’re purr-fect! We asked her for the best (pet) pickup line she could recall she couldn’t remember any. “I have been with my husband for 16 years, so it has been a long time since anyone tried to pick me up!” she explained.

Do pets ever feel like something different for dinner?

“I think so. Personally, I would get bored of the same meal every day, even though it is well balanced and has all the nutrients that are needed.”

What are dogs barking at in their sleep?

If you have ever watched a dog doze off into a slumber, barking and kicking in their sleep – you’ve probably wondered what dogs dream about. Dr Nicky thinks they are probably just chasing their next meal.

At dotsure.co.za your pet’s well-being is our top priority, which is why we appointed Dr Nicky as the Head of Pet Wellness. It is just another way we are ensuring that all your pet’s needs are considered so we can offer you pet insurance that is truly comprehensive*. This is just another way we create fans and not just policy holders.
