A new study by Canine Cottages has shown that dogs are more responsive to their owners’ emotions than previously thought. So, next time your dog gives you a big slobbery kiss, remember – it’s an act of love!

The data: Dogs love hearing “I love you”

Data proves dogs love

Canine Cottages discovered that hearing the words "I love you" from their owner raises a dog's heart rate by 46.2 per cent!

In a world where it feels as if everything is going wrong, from fuel prices to load shedding, it's nice to know that there's at least one thing that we can count on: our dogs really do love us. This study found that our four-legged babies don't just respond to the sound of their human's voice, they respond even better to hearing the words, “I love you!”

This proves what you've always suspected – that puppy love is real!

Cuddling makes dogs feel safe

Research proves dogs love

The study also found that cuddling soothes a puppy's anxiety (or calms them when they're frightened by bad weather). The dogs' heart rates also reduced by 22.7 per cent when being cuddled by their less fluffy buddy.

We don't need a survey to know how much you absolutely loooooove your furry companions. You prove it every day. From trips to the vet, spoiling them with treats, and making sure their pet insurance premiums are paid on time each month. But to be sure, the folk at Canine Cottages also tracked the owners' heart rates and found that they shot up by 10.4 per cent when reunited with their BFFs after a lengthy spell apart. It's not 43 per cent, but it's conclusive enough.

So, next time you see your tail-wagger doing their thing, know that it's because they're thrilled to see you and remember that your forever friend isn't just picking up on your emotions – your feelings are being reciprocated too.

Now that science has finally confirmed what dog lovers have known all along, you can brag with confidence about how much your furry friend really loves you!
