Here’s our list of 11 heart-pounding and hair-raising tourist attractions for trip-or-treaters who fear nothing:
1. A leap of fright.
If freefalling for more than 6 seconds from a 233 m height before your bungee cord rebounds is your idea of jumping for joy – the Skypark Macau Tower by AJ Hackett is for you! It boasts the Guinness World Record for the Highest Commercial Bungy Jump (from a building) and plunges you headfirst to within a mere 29 metres from the ground. Yikes!
2. Walk the plank.
Set against a backdrop of breath-taking scenic views and gorgeous temples, the track to Huashan Mountain does little to announce it as the world most dangerous hiking trail! But once you get to the cliffs, there’s no mistaking the heart-pounding plank paths than can turn anyone’s legs to jelly.
3. A trip up history lane.
If 96 kilometres of dense forest, difficult passes, and blood drenched wartime stories are your idea of a good time, the historic Kokoda Track is right up your alley.
4. Run... with the fish.
The Sardine Run is a wander to behold! But it’s also the classic tale of beauty and the beast. The sardines are followed by hordes of hungry dolphins and scores of sharks! So, dive in or run in the opposite direction (we won’t judge).
5. The reincarnation of Chucky.
An island of dolls doesn’t sound so scary, but the Isla de las Muñecas is beyond creepy! But if old dolls sporting missing limbs and empty eye sockets won’t give you nightmares – this could be the getaway of your dreams. Locals say they’ve heard the dolls whispering to each other (just F.Y.I.).
6. Bridge under troubled walkers.
Impressive panoramic views! Though some may say terrifying instead of impressive. The Bach Long Bridge (White Dragon Bridge) snakes around rocky mountainsides before spanning its glass wings over a 342 m valley between two peaks.
7. The Death Road.
Undeniably dangerous and treacherous to travel. From deadly bends to precarious cliffsides, the North Yungas Road has all the thrills foolhardy travellers could ever seek. Parts of the highway are only 3 m wide and safety barriers make for rare appearance sighting.
8. Paranormal activity?
In Pluckley, the ghosts are almost celebrities in what is said to be the most haunted place in England. There everyone knows where to find the ghost of the Watercress Woman, among others. So, if that sounds like paranormal fun to you, go for it.
9. Jack the Ripper Tour.
If the stories of history’s most terrifying serial killers don’t give you the chills, you might enjoy a guided tour through the creepiest streets and alleys where Jack was once on the loose.
10. Live on the edge.
There’s walking on the edge and then there is EdgeWalk! The world’s highest full circle hands-free walk around a building. If having your head in the clouds doesn’t make you queasy, walk it.
11. Gates of Hell.
Imagine a fire that has been burning for over 50 years. Sounds a lot like the stories of hell. Though technically called the Darvaza Gas Crater, this fiery place could be a great practise run for some (because you’ll never know).
