What the experts have to say about the importance of pet insurance.

Dr. Glynis Joubert is a small animal vet at Snip Veterinary Clinic in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. We asked her to share her thoughts about the importance of pet insurance.

Why do you think pet insurance is important?

“It’s so important in the time we live in, as nobody has large sums of money lying around. Emergencies happen at the most unexpected times. Many practices no longer have account facilities. When you have pet insurance, you can sleep easy knowing that no matter what happens, you will be able to provide your pet with the best care.”

Are there any experiences you can recall where pet insurance truly helped someone and their pet?

“I remember a tomcat who was hit by a car, which resulted in a broken leg. If the owners did not have insurance, he would have most likely had his leg amputated or he might even have been euthanised. Instead, he was able to have surgery, and he’s now a happy cat with all four legs!”

What are the benefits of pet insurance that pet parents are not always aware of?

“Some policies also cover day-to-day treatments and offer extra wellness benefits.”

When did you decide to become a vet?

“In my first year of studying Entomology, a lecturer suggested that I switch to Veterinary Science. I then went on to do my Honours in Animal Science and then Veterinary Science.”

Dr. Glynis, do you have any pets?

“Yes! I have three dogs. A Jack Russel who is the main man, a Bull Terrier who is just typical to the breed and never listens, and a Ridgeback crossed Fila who is quite relaxed about everything – until the Checkers delivery is at the gate.”

Any last thoughts?

“It is vital to have good pet insurance in place to ensure you can take the best care of your four-legged friend (as well as exotic pets).”
