As summer approaches, South Africans all across the country are dusting off their gym memberships and trying to get back in shape – fast. Unfortunately, fitness is something you work on throughout the year, and a quick-fix isn’t really a thing. Same goes for keeping your car in good condition – if you want a safe road trip this December, you have to make sure to look after your vehicle properly.

Fortunately, keeping your car in shape is a little easier than regularly doing crunches (at least we think so). Here are our top tips:

Go for regular check-ups

You go to the doctor and dentist every year (at least you’re supposed to!), and your car is no different. Having a trained mechanic cast their eyes over your car can help maintain its health over the long run. It’s especially important to check the functioning of vital parts like your brake system, alternator and wheel bearings. This is especially true if your “check engine” light comes on – think of it as your car having a toothache!

And, just like you wouldn’t go to any old doctor, make sure you entrust your car to a certified, trained mechanic with a good reputation.

Keep the fluids topped up

As much as you need water to stay hydrated, your car needs various fluids in order to run smoothly. The most important thing here is oil: your car simply isn’t going to make it far without it. Have your oil checked and changed regularly, as per your car manual’s instructions. Other important fluids to keep note of are your water, coolant, transmission fluid, windshield washer fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid.

Slow down

This is a pretty simple tip, yet probably the one that most people ignore. Driving fast and hitting speed bumps can cause wear and tear on your car’s parts, ageing them before their time. Simply slowing down and driving more mindfully can be a lifesaver – both for your car and other drivers.

Consider an extended motor warranty

Of course, even the most diligent fitness enthusiasts can fall prey to an unexpected doughnut in the break room now and again. Similarly, your car might need a part repaired or replaced due to a surprise mishap, no matter how well you’ve been taking care of it. If your warranty is still valid, the manufacturer may sort it out – but if the manufacturer’s warranty has expired, you’ll have to pay out of your own pocket. This is when you’ll be very pleased to have an extended plan in place!
