Half of the doctors you see on the big screen and your telly aren’t qualified or practicing doctors. They are just excellent at acting as if they are. However, the doctors you see on TikTok are real and they see actual patients and perform real (and often) life-saving operations.

Meet small screen star (and real vet) Dr Amir Anwary

He started to use TikTok 8 months ago to share his experiences as a veterinarian. Now he uses it as a platform to help and to teach pet owners (what a guy)! When he’s not busy saving lives, he’s making TikTok videos. Sometimes he makes TikToks videos while saving lives (but only when things at the clinic aren’t too busy). We asked Dr Amir a few questions, and this is what he had to say:

He’s always known he’d end up in scrubs

When we asked why he chose to become a vet, he explained that he'd always loved animals and knew that he wanted to help. “I considered being a human doctor at first. However, this never worked out, as my passion was with animals,”. He loves what he does but finds that the most challenging part of his job is when he tries his best to save a patient, only to realise that it wasn't good enough. But on the opposite side of that scale sits the most rewarding part of his job – seeing a healthy pet reunited with loved ones.

Most common pet ailment he sees and wellness tip for pawrents

“Most commonly, I see itchy dogs, scratching in dogs is not normal! They are chronically in a state of discomfort and need help. Often, a diet change and proper tick and flea control can make a huge difference! But I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian if you can.”

More like a zoo!

When we asked if he had any pets, his answer should have been – nope, I have a whole zoo! He boasted by saying, “I have many animals from goats and chickens to dogs and horses. My favourite is my Great Dane 'Shelby.' I have a very special bond with her. She has also changed the way I view my profession and has made me more compassionate towards all my patients.”. (Again, what a guy!)

Did someone say TICK-Tok?

His most viral video on TikTok is a video of him removing two ticks off a dog’s foot! He stated that, not unlike himself, “people enjoy oddly satisfying videos! So, I try to incorporate tick removal, abscess lancing, and other oddly satisfying videos in my content”. (We just had to ask)

Everybody dance now!

Dr Amir enjoys most of the dance trends on TikTok. He explained, “I love dancing (amateur dancing) and therefore try to follow these trends as much as possible.” But sometimes his schedule makes it difficult for him to learn them all.

The SPCA

When, finally, we asked what animal welfare cause or rescue organisation deserved more exposure on TikTok, his answer was short and sweet – “The SPCA.”
