Stop getting lost in translation! Here’s how to decode 5 types of road signs.

For some of us, the first and last time we saw some road signs was when we were studying our K53’s.  While some are more common than others, every road sign communicates vital information, whether that is an upcoming stop or the speed limit. Those that are less common can look like hieroglyphics to the average driver.

If you’re travelling on unfamiliar roads, it’s important to know the road signs and what they mean. We’ve put together a short refresher to get you road ready.

Warning Road Signs

These signs are triangular in shape and easily recognised by their red or yellow border. These are used to alert drivers of potential hazards or dangers that lie ahead, such as sharp turns, or roadworks. The purpose is to inform drivers to slow down, proceed with caution and be aware of the road conditions ahead. Warning signs are essential to help us avoid accidents and to promote safer roads.

Mandatory Road Signs

These signs are usually round, with a blue background and white border. These signs are situated in areas where drivers must adhere to specific requirements or regulations such as a minimum driving speed, or truck and bus-specific lanes. Mandatory signs are designed to communicate specific information to road users and to remind us of certain regulations.

Priority Road Signs

Unlike the other categories, these signs come in all shapes and colours. From the well-known red and white octagon that indicates a stop, to the lesser-known yellow and white diamond, these signs are used to clarify which drivers have the right of way at junctions, roundabouts, or the road ahead. Priority road signs are crucial to maintaining the flow of traffic and reducing the risk of accidents.
